How to Crochet the 4 Corners Coaster

The four corners crochet coaster pattern is very quick and easy to crochet. As a matter of fact, it’s so easy a new crochet beginner can master it. And you can use this free crochet pattern to make a coaster, a small bag or even a full-sized afghan.

The finished size of this coaster measures 4 inches square. It has four open holes close to the corners, which kind of makes it look pretty.

To get started, you will need to gather your materials. You only need a small amount of a worsted weight yarn. If making a coaster, I would recommend a cotton yarn. But if making an afghan square, you can use just about any worsted weight yarn that you have on hand.

As for your hook size, you will need an H/8-5.00mm.

To begin crocheting, you will make a slip knot on your crochet hook and make 4 chains. Join the last chain to the first chain made to form a small circle.

Round 1: Chain 1, work 2 single crochet into each chain. (You can also work 8 single crochet directly into the circle to make it easier.) Join with a slip stitch in first single crochet. (8 stitches made)

Round 2: Chain 1, 2 half double crochet in same stitch as join and into each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch in first stitch. (16 stitches made)

Round 3: Chain 1, 2 half double crochet in same stitch as join, 2 half double crochet in next 2 stitches, chain 2, *skip next stitch, 2 half double crochet in next 3 stitches, chain 2; repeat from * around to last stitch, skip last stitch. Join with a slip stitch in top of first stitch. (24 stitches and 4 chain-2 spaces made)

Round 4: Chain 1, half double crochet in same stitch as join, half double crochet into next 5 stitches, *7 half double crochets in chain-2 space, half double crochet in next 6 stitches; repeat from * around to last chain-2 space; 7 half double crochet in last chain-2 space. Join with a slip stitch in first stitch. (52 stitches made)

Round 5: Chain 1, single crochet in same stitch as join and into each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch in first single crochet. (52 stitches made) Fasten off and weave in your ends.

The crochet coaster may look a bit ruffled, but once you flatten it down a bit with your hands it’ll stay that way. And it’s just big enough to hold a coffee mug.

And if using this pattern to crochet an afghan, you can use up your scrap yarns. However, when you do your joins, I would pick a neutral color that works with all the colors that you used to make your squares. And there are many ways to join the squares. A simple single crochet always looks nice, but since these edges are a bit rounded, the flat-braid or any other similar and lacy technique will work.
